Friday 5th November
After a good nights sleep we woke in the morning to a full breakfast served by Ellie and Frank. She wouldn't let us go until we had eaten everything on the table. We didn't want to disappoint her so we ate all the food. When we had finished Frank brought in a load of coats, hats, scarves and gloves. I looked at him a little bemused and he started too laugh.
"Sammy you are going to the North Pole its a little cold there" he chuckledWe took the extra clothes and put them all on as quickly as possible. When we were ready we kissed Ellie goodbye and with Frank made our way towards the barn where the Dragons we were waiting for us.
"Morning boys" Kai said as we entered
"Morning Kai" I replied cheerfully. I didn't have a care in the world at the moment. After a rather hectic few weeks dealing with Carl I was looking forward too a nice calm trip too the North Pole for a change.
I climbed up on too Kai and took hold of the reins, I watched as Tommy and Jack did the same. Tommy didn't have to sit in his high chair now. The rescue last week had convinced Frank that he didn't need it any more. As I sat watching the others leave the barn on top of the Dragons Frank stopped Kai and walked around to where I was sitting.
"Sammy, I cant thank you enough for what you have done for me and Ellie" he looked a little upset as he said it
"Frank you helped us first I was only repaying the kindness you showed us when we needed help" I smiled at him
"Sammy do you have the letter I gave you?" He asked a little more intensely this time
I patted by pocket.
"Good boy, good. Now then take this" He handed me a little brown bag full with what felt like pebbles.
"What are these?" I asked taking the bag from him
"When you get too the North Pole bury one of these in the snow and stand well back" A twinkle crossed his eye for just a second
"Okay" I replied
"Oh and Sammy"
"Yes"
"We will meet again real soon I promise" and with that he shoved Kai hard in the back so that he started to run away from the barn. Before I could answer we were flying through the air catching up with the others who had already gone ahead without us.
"Kai"
"Yes Sammy"
"What did Frank mean by that?"
"You'll see when the time is right Sammy, you'll see" and he flew higher and higher into the sky.
Saturday 6th November
We spent most of the day hiding in the woods by the coast of Ireland as we didn't want to be seen. Me and Tommy spent most of the time telling the others about what we did, what our parents were like and the coach and all its cool tricks. Jack didn't want to say much which was fine by me. I could see it was a little difficult for him and I didn't want to press him too far on it. The Dragons were being very secretive as well. I got the feeling that there was more of this story too come than we had been told already. Kai nodded at me too come and stand by him, it seemed like he wanted too ask me a question, what I didn't know but I wandered over too him anyway.
"Sammy do you have the letter?" he asked
"Yes" I replied
"Whatever happens Sammy that letter must make it to the North Pole. Do you understand?" He seemed concerned and that worried me
"Kai why is this letter so important?" I asked nervously
"Sammy I cant tell you yet but I will I promise. Just make sure you don't lose it okay?"
I nodded back at him
"Good. Now lets get ready to go the sun is starting too set and we need too make our way there as soon as we can" He walked over to the others to tell them to get ready.
"What was that about?" I hadn't seen Tommy come up beside me.
"I have something that needs too get to the North Pole" I replied without thinking
"Something Frank gave you?" he asked
I tried not too sound surprised when I replied
"Yes, something very important"
"What is it?" He asked getting all excited
"A letter" I replied
"Is that it?. Blimey I though it was a Dragon egg or something that's pretty boring, wish I hadn't of asked now" He walked away towards Vie as he said it
Tommy my friend I'm not sure what this letter is but it seems very important all of a sudden I though too myself as I watched him walk away.
Sunday 7th November
We flew through the night. The air was cold and crisp and the night sky was clear. The stars shone brightly in the night and we could make out the sea below us which the moon glistened off perfectly. No one spoke for the entire flight. I'm not sure whether it was a mixture of excitement at where we were heading or nervousness at what we had been through. I played the conversations over and over again in my head that I had , had with Frank and Kai about the letter. Why was it so important? What secret was I taking with us on this journey? My thoughts were broken by the sudden expanse of whiteness below us. As far as I could see there was a white everywhere and it suddenly had got much, much colder. I was grateful for the warm clothes that Ellie had given us before we had left. Kai started too fly lower and lower until he gently touched down on the snow below us. Snow I though, real snow. It hardly ever snowed in England where we lived and here I was surrounded by the stuff. It was too good a chance too miss as I jumped off of Kai and scooped it up into a ball in my hands. It felt very cold but not as cold as it did when it hit Tommy on the back of the head.
"Oi" He turned looking too see where it had came from. As he did so another one hit him from the other side. Jack had though the same as I had and now Tommy was getting bombarded from both side. He ducked behind Vie who let out a little burst of flame every now and then too try and deflect as many as we could. It was great to be having fun again. It made a change to be able to be my age and not be older than I was for once.
"Sammy do you have the bag?" I turned to answer but a snowball hit me straight in the face. Spitting snow from my mouth and wiping it from my face I could see Kai standing there looking at me with a smile on his face.
"Yes" I said pulling it out of my pocket.
"Excellent. Take out one of the stones and bury it deep in the snow please" I did as he asked, as the others came closer around me not sure what too expect next.
"Good now stand back please" He started too blow fire on to where I had buried the stone.
"Oh that is awesome" The three of us cried in unison.
Monday 8th November
I woke up this morning in a nice warm bed. I stood up, and went to the bathroom and combed my hair, brushed my teeth, then went downstairs and had breakfast. Confused? What you think I'm still dreaming or perhaps you are?. You are not, let me explain. When we planted the pebble in the snow last night and Kai blew flames onto it a house started too grow in the snow. Yes that's right a house. You see the bag of pebbles that Frank had given us before we left were special pebbles. They were house pebbles. You buried them in the ground and then driven by a mass of heat they started to change and grow into houses. I had heard of these type of stones before, they were part of Elf legend but I didn't think they existed. The best part of all though was that Frank had added something extra too them and knowing that we were going to be taking the Dragons with us he had modified them slightly so as they also grew a shelter for them as well. We had stood there for ages just staring at the house, we couldn't believe it. It looked like Frank and Ellie's house and I wondered if this was the way that they had built theirs?. I guess one day I would be able too ask them. Kai had said today we were to rest so we spent the day playing in the snow and building snowmen, with Kai, Vie and Lis. Have you ever seen a Dragon build a snowman? It isn't pretty I can assure you! The problem is they have these huge wings and which are great for flying but gathering snow and moulding it? Nope, no good at all. After a few attempts they decided too let us get on with it, which we did. As darkness fell we all went back into the house too get into some dry clothes and warm up after playing in the snow all day. It dawned on us as we went too bed that night that we had reached the North Pole. We were almost at our journeys end, and we couldn't wait.
Tuesday 9th November
This morning I awoke too a knock on the door, thinking it was Kai I raced down the stairs and was surprised too see a penguin standing there. I know we are in the North Pole and we should expect to see these things but this one was knocking on the door.
"Hello" I looked at this penguin in front of me not knowing what too expect. He was quite tall for a penguin and was wearing a red bow-tie and a big shiny black top-hat.
"Hello, are you the one they call Sammy?" He replied
WOW!!!! He talked. I was still surprised by things that I really shouldn't have been, after all I had made friends with Dragons that talked, watched as a house grew from a pebble, a coach that flew and now a talking Penguin.
"Err Yes I am" I replied nervously
"Good, good. My name is Paul and I have an invitation here for you and your friends too come and meet the King of the Penguins this evening for a dinner in your honour. Please take this" He handed me a gold envelope and in shock I took it.
"Err, yes, err, yes" I stammered not sure really what too say.
"I take it from that you accept" He cocked his head too one side and looked at me.
"Yes, sorry of course we accept" I replied quickly
"Excellent, I shall tell him at once" He straightened up too leave
"Sorry, err before you go, I have a question"
"Of course ask away"
"How did he know we were here?" I asked curiously
"The King of the Penguins knows everything young Sammy" He answered in a way that meant I shouldn't have asked
"Fine, okay then, we will be there this evening, and thank you for the invitation"
"Your welcome, oh and before I forget bring the Dragons with you they are invited as well" and with that he started to waddle away.
i stood there for a moment trying to understand whether I was asleep or not, and realising I wasn't I closed the door and headed for the kitchen where I would find Tommy and Jack making breakfast noisy. This was going too blow their minds. A talking penguin? I could hardly believe it myself.
Wednesday 10th November
We were all rather excited about meeting the king of the penguins. The Dragons weren't too sure but we managed too talk them around in the end. We left the house at 7pm and followed the instructions about how too get there. Apparently there would be a pathway for us to follow. As we started too walk we noticed some lights in the distance and headed towards them. As we got closer too them we noticed they were small green lights that had been buried in the snow and made a line for us too follow. They shone brightly in the night sky. It was really cold as we walked through the snow and it made a crunching sound as our boots left footprints behind where we had just stepped. No one was throwing snowballs now we allow anted to get there as clean and tidy as we could. There was a slight breeze that had started too blow around us. The lights led us to the top of a snow mound, when we reached the top we all stood there staring into the valley below not quite believing what we saw. Below us was a village. Rows and rows of little houses all lit up. Red roofs as far as the eye could see. Penguins were bustling about hurrying here there and everywhere, they seemed to be getting ready for a party of some kind. We started too walk down the other side of the slope towards the village below, being careful not too fall as we did so. As we got too the bottom of the slope the penguin who had knocked on the door the day before was waiting for us. He stood there in his red bow-tie and his top hat perched firmly on his head his arms stretched wide waiting too great us.
"Welcome, welcome, welcome" He cheerily said
"Hi Paul" I said walking towards him.
"These are you friends? Let me see, Jack, Tommy, Vie, Lis, and ah yes Kai. Welcome all of you"
We all looked at each other amazed that he knew our names.
"Oh don't worry" he chuckled "Us penguins know everything. Now we must hurry the King awaits you". With that he started to head of into the middle of the town.
We followed quickly behind him. There were decorations in all the windows, hang lights that shone brightly in the night sky. The penguins that passed us smiled or nodded hello. If I hadn't had know better I would have said we were in a normal village at night time. The male penguins were wearing bow-ties and bowler hats whilst the woman were wearing large brimmed hats of all different colours. The boys were wearing flat caps and hanging onto their mothers arms, whilst the girls were pretty coloured bonnets that matched their mothers. They all seemed incredibly happy as well. Smiling and chatting as they went about their business. The way the village looked was amazing. Then the smell hit us, oh the smell, it was one of the most beautiful things I think I have ever smelt. Hot chocolate and toffee apples wafted across the night air as we walked behind Paul. Tommy stopped at the window of the shop where the smell was coming from and started dribbling at the window at the array of sweets and cakes that were placed there. Jack had too nudge him too make him walk faster. He didn't want to come but in the end he knew he had too.We had been walking for about 10 minutes when Paul stopped outside a house that looked a little grander than the others. It had lights and decorations in the windows but it was a little bigger than the others and a huge gold pulley hung outside the door. Paul pulled it and we waited for the door to be opened. A Penguin answered wearing a bow tie just like Paul's and nodded at Paul and beckoned us into the house.
"I'm afraid we cant fit the Dragons in the house but if they go round the back they will be feed and can watch through the glass doors to make sure you are okay" Paul said nervously
"That will be fine" Said Kai and he started too lead the others along a large alley way.
We followed Paul inside, the walls were covered with pictures of elegant looking penguins that looked like they were from a long line of the family. The things was though they were all covered in tinsel around the edges, and I could have sworn some of them weren't too happy about it if they hadn't been penguins. As we stood there in the hallway waiting too see what would happen next we were suddenly aware of a much larger Penguin standing in front of us. On his head was a golden crown covered with Diamonds, and Ruby's that glimmered in the light. Next too him was his wife wearing a similar crown but with a string of pearls around her neck as well. She was slightly smaller than him but was just as nice and hugged us all after the King had put us down.
"Is this Sammy?" He asked Paul looking at me up and down
"Yes Sir" Paul replied
Before I could answer I could feel myself being lifted of the ground in a huge hug. The smell of fish wasn't great but he was kind of warm and cuddly all the same.
"Sammy, its a great honour for me too finally meet you. Please eat and drink as much as you want, we have a lot too discuss".
Thursday 11th November
As I lay in bed the that morning my mind wandered back to the events of the previous night. The King had made us so welcome. We had sat at a huge oak table, the chairs were made of gold and covered with red velvet. The food was beyond anything I had ever eaten. We could have whatever we wanted. We all chose Hamburgers and chips and they were the most amazing hamburgers I have ever tasted. Jack and Tommy had seconds whilst the King took me off too another room so we could talk. His wife said she would look after them and make sure that they didn't get bored. He was very friendly and knew all about us and why we were here. He couldn't believe what Carl had tried to do to us. He knew all about Frank and Ellie and asked after them to make sure they were okay. When he had finished talking about them he moved onto the REAL reason why he had asked us too come here.
"Sammy, you may not know this but Carl is a real danger to the way we live and the good that Father Christmas does" He looked at me too make sure I was understanding what he was saying.
"I know, but he escaped from the cave before we could stop him" I replied sadly
"Sammy no one is blaming you for his escape, Frank told me that without you and your friends help he would still be in that cave. Carl is a dangerous man Sammy and you must be extremely careful and aware of that. He wills top at nothing too make sure he has his revenge on Father Christmas" He looked away as he said the last bit as if he was remembering a painful memory from the past.
"What did he do?" I asked nervously
"Sammy now is not the time for me too tell you, did Frank give you a letter by any chance?" he asked
This surprised me a little, how did he know about the letter?. The surprise must have spread across my face as he looked at me and smiled.
"Sammy, don't be surprised that I know about the letter. Frank and I are old friends. I do not need too see the letter, I just need to know you have it as one day you may have too read its contents." He placed an arm on my shoulder too reassure me.
"Now then how about we go and play some games Ive kept you away from your Friends long enough"
We spent the rest of the night playing board games and laughing and joking with the King and Queen. When it became a little late they offered us the chance to stay the night but we didn't want to outstay our welcome and Kai and the other Dragons said they would make sure we got home okay. We left happy and rather full pleased that we had made new friends.
A knock at the door disturbed my thoughts and I got up out of the warm bed that I was in.
Bang Bang Bang
The knocks were getting louder and longer as I hurried down the stairs.
"Okay I'm coming" I called impatiently as I reached the bottom of the stairs. I pulled the handle of the door and there standing in the door way was Paul, a very worried look on his face
"Sammy you must come at once something terrible has happened" there was a look of pure terror on his face.
I grabbed my coat and ran out of the door.
Umm hot chocolate and toffee apples, can I go there?
